PROFILE
Following in his father’s footsteps, Mike studied architecture at Leeds between 1986 and 1993. During an extended ‘year-out’, Mike travelled to Vancouver where he met and worked for renowned organic architect John Kay. He returned to Vancouver in 1993 when he was awarded the Bedford Scholarship by the West Yorkshire Society of Architects to research Kay’s work and theories on architecture.
Upon his return to the UK, Mike assisted with the renovation of the Leeds headquarters of the Royal Institute of British Architects before designing a range of projects from award-winning bars to large residential schemes and major retail developments for two Leeds practices.
Mike qualified as an architect in 1996 and joined careyjones architects a year later: he joined the Board of Directors there in 2002. Whilst at careyjones, Mike co-led the practice’s largest architectural team, working on projects across all market sectors throughout the UK. He was also responsible for the practice’s Marketing & Communications strategy during his time as Director.
Over recent years, Mike has established an excellent reputation for designing innovative buildings for Higher Education institutions, high-profile Mixed Use developments and regenerative masterplans, as well as working on a range of projects within the Leisure and Hospitality sector.
Notable completed projects within Mike’s portfolio whilst at careyjones include several buildings within the Clarence Dock development in Leeds, the Dakota Hotel in Edinburgh, the Brooklands Hotel in Surrey and the Casa Hotel and Office scheme in Chesterfield. Within the Higher Education sector, Mike’s portfolio includes the acclaimed Soundhouse and the Jessop Building for the University of Sheffield and The Innovation Hub for the University of Leeds.
