About Fuse

Fuse1 (fũz) v.t. 1. to unite by or as if by melting together

The best ideas are simple.  So is the idea behind Fuse.  Our intention in creating Fuse was to unite architecture and interior design in a manner that completely removed the boundary between the two disciplines.  As a result, Fuse is not an architectural practice which happens to include an interior design team.  Nor is it two teams working independently and collaborating occasionally.  Fuse is one extremely talented team with exceptional skills in both architecture and interior design.  Every single project benefits from both skill sets – whether an architectural or interiors commission, or both.  The Fuse team is led by four principals – two specialising in architecture and two in interior design – with a combined sixty years experience at the highest levels of the construction design business.  Fuse is different.

Fuse: Creating Buildings that Work at Every Level

Intelligent spacial planning can transform the operational efficiency of a building and can reduce its gross area by as much as 15%, with no loss of usable or revenue-generating space..  The larger and more complex the building, the greater the benefit that can be derived.  The financial upside to building owners and operators is obvious and yet often, we see buildings and building designs that squander space and fail to arrange and connect their spaces in the best possible configuration.

Equally, building interiors that are conceived without due regard for structure, services, energy efficiency, pedestrian routes, vertical movement and fire safety will also fail to meet their potential.

At Fuse, our architectural projects have a wealth of space planning and interior design expertise on tap to ensure that they work as well internally as they do externally  – irrepspective of whether we are appointed as interior designers.  Equally, our interiors projects draw upon the considerable architectural expertise within the team – irrespective of whether we are appointed as architects.  It sounds obvious, but this approach is extremely rare within the industry.

Fuse: A Practice Created for the New Reality

The world has changed since the start of the global financial crisis of and nowhere more than in the construction industry.   With budgets tight and development finance scarce, today’s client is looking for agile, responsive design teams whose principals are genuinely hands-on with their projects, not just appearing for a few weeks and then handing responsibility to less experienced members of staff.  They need their designers to be able to react quickly, to be available to take that important call during the evenings and at weekends.  They want their design fees to pay for exemplary service, not huge overheads.   Fuse was established to meet those needs.

Fuse: Huge Experience – Genuine Expertise

Fuse has four principlas with six decades of experience between them.  They have managed both architectural and interiors projects with values in excess of £100m.  Each principal has developed specialist knowledge in a number of building types such that Fuse is able to bring to bear industry-leading expertise across a number of different sectors.  The sheer breadth of that experience and expertise can be seen by browsing the ‘Projects’ pages.

Fuse: International Reputation and Workload

Fuse is based in Manchester and Leeds but works nationally and internationally.  The Fuse principals have worked extensively in the USA, the Middle East and in Russia, collaborating with an international cast of other design practices and construction professionals, on projects from small restaurants to major masterplans.  Alongside its work in the UK, Fuse is presently working on projects in Italy, Belgium, Spain and Austria.
